SASKATOON – The University of Regina Cougars men's basketball team shot the lights out on Saturday night, hitting 18 three-pointers en route to a 103-74 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies inside the PAC.
In the battle between the provincial rivals the Cougars were dominant throughout, leading for over 32 minutes of the game and finishing the night with their largest lead of 31 points.
Grieshe Clerjuste, Carter Millar and Samuel Hillis all had outstanding games for the visitors, pouring in 26, 20 and 20 points respectively. Clerjuste also added six rebounds, four assists and pair of steals on the night.
For the Huskies
JT Robinson led the way, recording 24 points on 9-17 shooting from the field.
It was the second quarter that keyed the visitor's victory. Trailing 20-19 after the first quarter, the Cougars went on a 33-3 run that extended until two minutes left to go in the frame. During that run Regina made 12 of their 14 field goal attempts, including 9 of 10 from beyond-the-arc with Millar and Clerjuste both scoring eight points.
Saskatchewan battled back in the second half but the damage had already been done as the Cougars were able to ride out the remainder of the game for the victory.
The win moves Regina to 4-4 on the season while the Huskies, who entered the weekend ranked fifth in the nation, suffered their first loss of the regular season and just their second in the 12 games they have played in 2019-20.
Both of these teams will be back in action next weekend. The Cougars will face a stern test at home in the form of the Alberta Golden Bears while Saskatchewan hits the road to take on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
