WINNIPEG- One night after Saskatchewan Huskies goalie
Jessica Vance came up with a huge third period to lead her team to victory, it was Manitoba Bisons' netminder Amanda Schubert who returned the favour Saturday afternoon at Wayne Fleming Arena.
Up by a score of 2-1 with seven minutes remaining in the third, Schubert slid across her crease to deny Huskie forward
Abby Shirley of the game-tying goal. The Bisons went on to end their six-game losing streak and earn the 2-1 victory.
Herd defender Chloe Snaith also ended what was a 13-straight period goalless drought for Manitoba with her goal in the second period. Her first of two points in the game.
The Bisons found themselves in deep penalty trouble to start the game. The hosts took five minor penalties in the opening frame, but thanks to a strong penalty kill, kept the Huskies to without a goal. First-year Bison Sarah Dennehy had the best scoring chance of the first. The St.Mary's Academy grad found herself in 1-on-1 with Saskatchewan goalie
Camryn Drever but fired her shot wide of the net. Schubert was tested with several scoring chances by the visitors but turned away all seven shots she faced in the period.
Manitoba's Snaith finally broke the deadlock mid way through the second period to give the Bisons their first lead in the last six games. Minutes later while on the power play, Katie Chatyrbok gave Manitoba a 2-0 lead with her first goal of the season.
With the home side up by two goals to start the third, the Huskies got themselves back in the game early with a goal from
Shyan Elias. The first Saskatchewan tally came after
Morgan Willoughby's point shot hit a body in front of Schubert who wasn't able to find it before Elias slid the puck into the Manitoba net. Now up 2-1 with just over seven minutes left in the game, Schubert's huge save on Shirley was just what the Bisons needed to clinch the victory.
Next weekend the Huskies are back in Saskatchewan for a home-and-home series against their provincial rivals, the Regina Cougars. For Manitoba, they will be on the road in Edmonton for a pair of games against the Alberta Pandas.
