Thunderbirds overcome early deficit to topple Huskies

SASKATOON – After winning the first set the University of Saskatchewan Huskies were unable to capitalize on their early momentum in a 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-16) loss at the hands of reigning U SPORTS National champion UBC Thunderbirds on Oct. 25.

UBC's dominance at the service line, led by Kayla Oxland who racked up seven aces, allowed them to pull away for the victory after they recorded 14 aces in the match.

Gabrille Attieh compiled 16 kills on 32 attempts, followed by Anna Price who finished with eight while Kayla Oxland had 33 assists in the victory.

Emily Koshinsky was the most lethal Huskie, finishing the night with 14 kills. Not far behind Koshinsky was Mandi Fraser 10.

The host Huskies started the stronger of the two teams, jumping out to 14-5 lead thanks to an ace from Fraser. From there the Huskies were able to ride out the remainder of the set for the early lead.

UBC came roaring right back however and Oxland was at the line for nine-straight UBC points in the middle of the frame, flipping the script from a 10-6 Huskie lead all the way to a 15-10 advantage for UBC.

The Thunderbirds would take the second from there, rolling to a 25-18 set victory.

A third set that saw UBC finish 12 swings compared to Huskies' 7 allowed the visitors to take control of the match with 25-19 victory.

After a back-and-forth start to the fourth set, UBC ran away with it late. With the game tied 13-13, UBC scored 12 points compared to the Huskies three to salt the game away at 25-16.

Both of these teams are back in action tomorrow for an afternoon game at 3:00 p.m. inside the PAC.
