Pronghorns take down banged up Huskies

Jan. 5 (Saskatchewan Huskies 73, Lethbridge Pronghorns 98) Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court

SASKATOON – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's basketball team took the lead just over five minutes into the game and never looked back as they rolled to a 98-73 victory over the host Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday, Jan. 5 on Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court.

A Kyle Peterson three-pointer gave Lethbridge a 15-14 lead and the game would never be tied again, as the Pronghorns quickly pulled away from a Huskies team that was missing three starters due to injury.

Zac Overwater was a force to be reckoned with all night long, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Colton Gibb, Mike Pierzchala and Eric Pierce chipped in with 20, 17 and 16 points respectively to help pace one of the highest scoring offences in the conference in the victory.

Rookie Alexander Dewar had by far the best game of his young Huskies career, scoring 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting while JT Robinson and Addison Dewar each scored 15 points.

The win concludes a weekend sweep for the Pronghorns and moves them to 6-6 on the year where they sit just two points behind the Huskies for eighth place in the conference.

After the Huskies worked an early lead in the contest, that Peterson three sparked a 10-2 Pronghorns run to end the first quarter and put them ahead 25-16 after the opening frame thanks in large part to 15 points from Gibb and Overwater combined.

A back-and-forth second quarter saw the Huskies fight back from a 14-point deficit to get the lead down to seven on a couple of occasions but despite nine points in the frame from Robinson, the Pronghorns always found an answer and entered the halftime break leading by ten.

Lethbridge's offence exploded in the third quarter, shooting the ball at a 57 per cent clip, allowing the visitors to jump out to a 17-point lead heading into the fourth.

From there the Pronghorns were able to put the game into cruise control as a battered Huskies squad was unable to mount the comeback, scoring just 12 points in the fourth as Lethbridge finished the night with their largest lead of the game.

The Huskies will be on a bye next weekend before returning to Canada West action with a trip to Calgary where they will take on the Mount Royal Cougars on January 18 & 19.

Lethbridge meanwhile will return to Alberta as they play a home-and-home set with those very same Cougars, beginning in Calgary on January 10 with the return leg at home on the 12.
