Hot-shooting Huskies sweep Bobcats

Nov. 24 (Saskatchewan Huskies 90, Brandon Bocats 72) Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's basketball team hit nearly 60 per cent of their shots in the fourth quarter to hold off the Brandon Bobcats in a 90-72 victory on Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court on November 24.

JT Robinson scored 23 points for the second-straight night to lead the Huskies who move to 6-4 on the season after back-to-back wins at home.

Emmanuel Akintunde and Chan De Ciman both recorded double-doubles on the night, Akintunde scored 20 and added 11 boards while De Ciman went for 15 and 12. Maxwell Amoafo finished just one rebound short of a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Tyvon Cooper was the top-scorer for the Bobcats yet again, after pouring in 25 points for a Bobcats team that holds a record of 1-7.

Pookie Saunders and Jaleel Webb both joined Cooper atop the scoring sheet for the Bobcats with 19 and 10 points respectively.

The Huskies used strong defensive play to jump out to the lead in the first, holding the Bobcats to just 4-for-15 from the floor and 12 points in the frame. Kevone Philip and Troy Grant both scored five points but five different Huskies got on the board to send Saskatchewan into the first break of the game up 20-12.

That lead would be extended in the second quarter thanks in large part to the Huskies out-rebounding the Bobcats 13-5. Robinson scored 11 and De Ciman eight, as the Huskies widened the gap to 43-28 at the half.

Brandon started the third on a 12-2 run thanks to strong defence, forcing three-straight turnovers and cut lead down to as little as five points but Saskatchewan had and closed out the quarter on a 12-6 run to head into the fourth and final quarter leading 61-50.

That run would continue into the fourth and the Huskies widened the gap to as far as 75-59 in the middle of the frame. Brandon would try to battle back but it was a case of too little too late as Saskatchewan would ride out the remainder of the fourth quarter for the 18-point victory.

Both of these teams will play their final games of the calendar year next weekend.

Brandon will split a home-and-home series with Winnipeg, hosting the Wesmen on Nov. 30 before the return leg on the road on Dec. 1.

Saskatchewan will stay inside the friendly confines of the PAC, where they welcome the UNBC Timberwolves on Nov. 29 & 30.
