Saskatchewan steams to straight sets victory over Brandon

Oct. 20 (Saskatchewan Huskies 3, Brandon Bobcats 0) Brandon, MB

BRANDON – It was a stark contrast from the previous night as the Saskatchewan Huskies rolled to a straight-sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) victory over the host Bobcats on Saturday.

The two teams slugged it out in a long five-set match on Friday, but Saskatchewan hit above .300 as a team in all three sets, running an efficient offence to earn the quick win.

Fifth-year outside hitter Regan Wiebe spoke about the contrasting matches, as Saturday's win was the opposite of Friday's marathon match.

"I'm a little sore today, but just the excitement to play in a Canada West match is always enough to give you enough energy," says Wiebe following the win.

"I think tonight we came out with a little more confidence and knowing that we can do this. Ultimately, we just stuck to our game plan really well tonight and that was really the difference," Wiebe added.

Wiebe was one of three Huskies to hit a high efficiency, finishing with six kills on eleven swings, good for a .455 rate.

Emily Koshinsky continued her hot start to the 2018-19 season by registering an impressive stat line of 19 kills and just three errors, good for a .500 attack efficiency.

The Huskies were efficient in the first set, hitting .393 as a team as fifth-year setter Alexandra Frank dished out 10 assists. The Bobcats struggled to click early, hitting .079 in the first frame.

Bobcats rolled the bench late in the first and early in the second sets, as first-years Stephanie Miller, Shayne Nichols, and Deserae Unger all saw time on the court, and all made contributions that provided BU with some momentum as the teams were tied 14-14, before the Huskies went on a 6-1 run to close out the second.

After trailing 18-5 in the third the Bobcats mounted a late comeback, fighting to within one point at 19-18, but the Huskies stayed the course and ended the match on a 4-1 run.

The win improves Saskatchewan's record to 2-0 in conference play while the Bobcats fall to 0-2.

Both teams will enjoy a bye next weekend.
