LETHBRIDGE – The University of Saskatchewan men's soccer team scored a late-minute equalizer to earn a 2-2 draw against the Lethbridge Pronghorns, on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Nikolas Baikas and
Kwame Opoku found the back of the net for the Huskies, while
Bryce Marinus and
Jakub Rogowski chipped in assists. For the Pronghorns, Stephen Primeau had both goals, and defender Ellis Davies record an assist.
The match marked a crucial contest for both clubs with their playoff fates hanging in the balance. With the draw, Saskatchewan moved to 3-6-2, while Lethbridge now sits at 0-8-3.
Only four minutes into the contest, Marinus fed the ball to the top of the 18-yard box, where Baikas one-timed a shot to the bottom corner for his second goal of the season, to put the Huskies ahead 1-0.
Lethbridge had their first dangerous chance in the 24th minute after a Pronghorn cross created a chance for a header by Corey Frecka but the ball was cleared off the line by Huskies defender,
Jacob Powell.
Moments later, Pronghorn captain Sean Gaiesky had a good look but, Buckley deflected the shot out for a Horns corner kick.
In 33rd minute, Ellis Davies crossed the ball back into the Huskies penalty area and Primeau ran on to the ball, half volleying a strike past Huskies goal keeper
Greg Buckley to tie the game at one.
At the half, the Huskies held a six to four advantage in shots, but the Pronghorns had three shots on goal compared to the Huskies two.
In the 60th minute, the Huskies nearly regained their lead. Marinus crossed a ball to the far side of the Pronghorns penalty area, on a transition break, to a wide-open
Marcello Gonzalez but his one-touch sailed wide.
Saskatchewan went back on the offensive following the chance in the 60th minute, but neither
Mohamed Omar nor
Gabriel Buatois were able to find the back of the net.
In the 79th minute, the Pronghorns were awarded a penalty kick and senior forward Stephen Primeau stepped up and slotted home his second goal of the day and third of the season, which put Lethbridge ahead 2-1.
With the match just two minutes shy of full time, the Huskies went to work and refused to go home empty handed, as Rogowski cut the ball back into the Pronghorns box to a waiting Opoku who made no mistake to tie the score at two. The timely strike came at a highly opportune time for Saskatchewan, which was Opoku's first goal of the 2018 campaign.
Stats at the final whistle saw the Huskies hold a 14 to 7 advantage in shot attempts, while the Pronghorns had six corner kicks compared to the Huskies three.
The Huskies will look to secure a victory as they battle the Pronghorns for the second match in as many days between the two programs, with kick-off at 2:15 p.m. The game will be streamed live on
