Huskies Win Third Straight To Open Season

Box Score

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies made it three straight wins to open the Canada West season with a 3-2 win over the University of Calgary Dinos Friday night

With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 3-0 on the season. Calgary remains winless at 0-2-1.

Hanna McGillivray scored the game winner at 11:35 of the third period to propel the Huskies to the win. With the Huskies controlling the puck in the Calgary end, Kori Herner found McGillivray ready at the point. The defenceman sent a hard wrist shot through a crowd to the back of the Dino net. The goal gave the Huskies a 3-1 lead.

Paige Anakaer opened the scoring at 16:54 of the first period. After a scramble ensued in front of the Dinos net, the Huskie captain was quick to jump on the puck and send it past an outstretched Sarah Murray to give the Huskies an early lead.

Marley Ervine made it 2-0 for Saskatchewan at 5:35 of the second with a power play goal. Flinton took the puck from end to end, driving hard at the Dinos net before finding Ervine with a quick backhand pass in front of the net. Ervine chipped the puck over the shoulder of Murray and into the net.

The Dinos would get on the board at 16:54 of the second period to cut the lead to one. Morgan Loroff used a quick spin move to create space and fire a low shot on net. Huskie goalie Cassidy Hendricks steered the shot aside with a pad save, but Chelsea Court was able to corral the rebound and send it over the glove of Hendricks for the first Dinos marker.

McGillivray's goal near the midway point of the third restored the two-goal Huskie lead.

Apply pressure late with the net empty, Calgary closed to within one. A hard point shot from Stephanie Vonkovic deflected off of a Huskie in front of Hendricks to fall over top of the netminder who was down to make the save.

The Dinos would continue to press for the equalizer in the closing minutes, but Hendricks was up to the task.

Hendricks made 18 saves in goal for the Huskies, while Murray made 27 for the Dinos.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Rutherford Rink.
