OTTAWA (CIS) - Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Thursday the 85
football players who will participate in the ninth annual East West Bowl,
presented by Under Armour, on Saturday, May 7, 2010 at TD Waterhouse Stadium on
the campus of The University of Western Ontario in London, Ont.
University of Saskatchewan Huskie All-Canadians Ben Heenan and Bryce McCall, as
well as defensive back Keenan MacDougall have all been selected to the game
that features top eligible prospects in the 2011 CFL Entry Draft. The three
follow a long list of Huskie players that have suited up in the game including
now CFL players J Dylan Barker and Scott McHenry. Heenan played in the 2010 East-West
Bowl, while McCall and MacDougall will all be in the game for the first time.
Huskie head coach Brian Towriss and defensive coordinator Ed
Carleton will join the coaching staff for Team West. Towriss will look after
the field goal unit, while Carleton will be in charge of punting.
“It is an honor to be able to represent the Huskie football program and the
University of Saskatchewan on the national level,” said Heenan. “I look forward
to competing against the best that the CIS has offer.”
Heenan helped the Huskies to the top scoring offence with 287 points, total
offence averaging 499.8 yards per game and the second-best rushing offence in
the conference at 172.9 yards per game. Safety McCall had 26.5 tackles and four
interceptions for the Huskies and sits just six away from the all-time CIS
interceptions record after just three seasons. MacDougall finished the season
with 35 tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one kick return.
Western is hosting the game for the third straight year. The
contest was previously held at McMaster (2008), Laval (2007, 2006) and Wilfrid
Laurier (2005, 2004, 2003). Kickoff for the 2011 affair is set for 1 p.m.
The week-long event also includes the East West Bowl Free Agent Camp on May 4,
as well as a coaches' clinic on May 6 and 7.
Glen Constantin, head coach of the reigning Vanier Cup champion Laval Rouge et
Or, will lead the East squad in London while Blake Nill, who has guided his
Calgary Dinos to back-to-back Vanier Cup appearances, will be in charge of the
West contingent for the second straight year.
EAST WEST BOWL NOTES: The East team prevailed 12-9 in 2010
to improve its all-time record to 2-6 in the series... Past East West Bowl
participants include Hec Crighton Trophy winners Brad Sinopoli of Ottawa,
Benoit Groulx of Laval, Daryl Stephenson of Windsor, Andy Fantuz of Western,
Jesse Lumsden of McMaster and Tommy Denison of Queen's... Fantuz, a former Grey
Cup champion with Saskatchewan, signed with the NFL's Chicago Bears over the
winter... Other notables include former Western Mustang Vaughn Martin, who
spent the last two seasons with the San Diego Chargers after being selected in
the fourth round in the 2009 NFL Collegiate Draft, former Sherbrooke Vert &
Or Samuel Giguère, currently on the New York Giants' reserve roster, and former
