Huskies Suffer Lopsided Loss to Cougars in Saturday Rematch

SASKATOON, Sask. – After a tightly contested game Friday night (Jan. 16) the U SPORTS No. 5-ranked MRU Cougars flexed their muscles Saturday (Jan. 17), handing the Huskies a convincing 5-1 loss on home ice.

Coming into Saturday night's matchup in Saskatchewan, Mount Royal carried the Canada West's best road winning percentage, and the Cougars once again showed why, riding a balanced offensive attack and steady goaltending to a 5–1 win over the Huskies.

Despite controlling much of the early possession, Mount Royal was initially kept off the scoreboard by a sharp performance from Saskatchewan netminder Colby Wilson, who made several key stops as the Cougars tested her early.

The Huskies' first power play opportunity, coming thanks to a Cougar trip, saw Mount Royal's second ranked penalty kill in Canada West (91.4%) stand firm, keeping the game in scoreless tie.

Momentum swung just past the midway point of the opening period when Allee Gerrard capitalized on a loose puck in front, firing home her ninth goal of the season to give the visitors a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Gerrard, along with Sydney Benko and Jerzey Watteyne, now sits tied for the team lead in goals.

The Cougars grabbed full control in the second period, mirroring their success from the previous night. Just 6:32 into the frame, Kiana McNinch doubled the lead after corralling a rebound in tight for her fifth of the season. Less than five minutes later, Sydney Benko extended the advantage with an even-strength marker, finishing off a setup from Gerrard.

Mount Royal wasn't done there. Breanne Comte struck just over a minute later, converting a feed from Keyana Bert to make it 4-0. The Cougars out shot Saskatchewan heavily through the middle frame, forcing Wilson to continue facing pressure as she finished the night with 42 saves and 70 stops over the two‑game weekend series.

The Huskies found a spark early in the third period when captain Sara Kendall broke in alone and snapped a shot top corner just 57 seconds in, snapping Katherine Holan's shutout bid. Any comeback hopes were short‑lived, however, as Mount Royal reestablished its four‑goal cushion late in the frame. With 6:12 remaining, Jerzey Watteyne buried a feed from Julia Duke to seal the 5-1 victory.

The Huskies will head on the road next to take on the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton while the Cougars return home to host the Regina Cougars.
