Huskies fall 3-2 to MacEwan after late third period push

SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies controlled large stretches of play on Saturday night (Nov. 22)  at Merlis Belsher Place, but a late three-goal surge from the MacEwan Griffins proved to be the difference in a 3–2 Huskie loss to close out the weekend series.

Saskatchewan set the tone early, generating clean zone entries and sustained pressure in the offensive end. The Huskies' efforts paid off late in the first period when Peppi Virtanen opened the scoring. After an initial shot slipped behind MacEwan goaltender Mikayla Christmann and sat loose in the back of the crease, Virtanen drove hard to the net and tapped it in before the Griffins could clear. Bronwyn Boucher and Kahlen Wisener picked up assists on the play, and the Huskies carried a 1–0 lead into the first intermission.

The second period continued with Saskatchewan in control, at even strength. The Huskies outshot MacEwan 13–1 in the period and generated multiple looks on the power play but couldn't find a second goal. MacEwan weathered the pressure, leaning on Christmann and a composed penalty kill to keep the deficit at one heading into the final period.

The game shifted dramatically in the third. MacEwan tied the game when Allee Isley knocked in a centering pass at the top of the crease. Just over a minute later, the Griffins struck again, this time Sydney Jack finishing a quick passing play off the rush to give MacEwan a 2–1 lead. The momentum continued when Sasha Malenfant made it 3–1, capitalizing on a scramble in front.

Despite the quick swing, Saskatchewan pushed right to the final buzzer. With 53 seconds remaining, Kendra Zuchotzki pulled the Huskies within one, snapping home her second of the season off a setup from Jayde Cadieux and McKenna Bolger. Saskatchewan pressed with the goalie pulled in the final moments, but MacEwan held on to secure the win.

The Huskies finished with a 25–13 advantage in shots, while Emma Backman turned aside 10 pucks in the loss. Christmann made 23 saves for the Griffins.

Saskatchewan now heads on the road next weekend (Nov. 28-29) for a two game series against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.
