Spartans Score Four Unanswered, Hand Huskies Second Consecutive OT Loss

SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskie Women's Hockey team got off to a hot start but could not hold back the Trinity Western Spartans Saturday night (Oct. 18) at Merlis Belsher Place, suffering a second consecutive overtime loss to see the Spartans leave Saskatoon with a weekend sweep.

Despite the result the Huskies pick up valuable points in the Canada West standings and move to 1-1-2 through the opening weeks of the regular season. Meanwhile, the Spartans improve to 4-2-0 and take sole possession of second place in the conference's West Division.

After a killing off an early penalty just past the midway point in the period, the Huskie first line got things going. McKenna Bolger would set up Kaysah Nurani for her first of the season and the Huskies' first lead since their 1-0 win over MRU. Less than three minutes later the top line was back on the ice and once again found the back of the net. This time it was Nurani setting up Kara Mitenko for her first career U SPORTS goal and a 2-0 Saskatchewan lead heading into the first intermission.

Just over one minute into the second period, Paris Oleksyn extended the Huskie lead to three, netting her first of the campaign. The fifth-year forward scored a goal scorers goal, walking into the zone one-on-one with a defender before beating TWU goalie Olivia Davidson with a snipe into the top left corner.

The Saskatchewan shutout would last just six minutes longer, as just prior to the seven minute mark Chloe Reid got the Spartans on the board with her third of the season. Reid's score came thanks a deflection off a Huskie defender, who redirected the puck into the top left corner of the net and past an unsuspecting Clara Juca in net.

Just a few minutes later the visiting team found the back of the net again after Kailey Ledoux snuck in behind the Huskie defence for a breakaway and before calmly beating Juca with a back-handed shot. Ledoux's first of the season cut the Saskatchewan lead to just one heading into the second intermission.

Midway through the third, a Huskie head contact penalty sent the Spartans to the power play for just the second time and saw the visiting team capitalize for a game-tying goal. It was Jordyn Matthews who tied things up for the Spartans, throwing the puck at the next and getting a favourable deflection.

Despite ending the third with a power play opportunity and some strong chances, the two teams would head to overtime for the second time in as many nights.

In what was reminiscent of Friday night's game, the Spartans scored just 13 seconds into the extra frame, stealing another road win thanks to a game-winner from Chloe Reid.

The Huskies are back in action next Friday, with a U-Prairie matchup against the Regina Cougars set to take place at The Co-operators Centre. The Dogs will then return to MBP Saturday night for the second game of their weekend home-and-home series with the Cougars.
