REGINA, Sask. - The University of Regina's women's hockey team scored a 4-1 victory over Saskatchewan in a U-Prairie Challenge game on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
The Cougars opened the scoring when Trinity Grove crashed the net late in the first period following a Jules Stokes slap shot from the right point. Stokes' shot was kicked out by Saskatchewan goalie
Colby Wilson, but Grove pounced on the rebound for her second of the season.
The game hit the halfway mark still with Regina up 1-0, but the two teams combined for four goals in the second half of the second period. The flurry started when Grove sent a hard pass towards defender Megan Long, who redirected it past Wilson to extend Regina's lead to two.
Saskatchewan got on the board less than a minute later with
Avery Gottselig's second of the weekend, but the Cougars rallied with a pair of goals just 32 seconds apart just before the second intermission.
The first of Regina's two quick-strike goals was by Long, who continued her sensational weekend with a power play goal off a long shot through traffic from the point. The next goal started with a great play by Jordyn Blais to keep the puck in at the right point, and then Paige Hubbard found Shaylee Scraba for a one-timer in the slot to put the Cougars up 4-1.
Saskatchewan had an 8-4 advantage in shots in the third, but couldn't solve Regina goalie and Canada West save percentage leader Natalie Williamson.
