SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Women's Hockey Team faced off against the Canada West No. 5-ranked Manitoba Bisons in the second of a set of thrilling back to back games this weekend at Merlis Belsher Place.
After a 3-2 overtime win for the Bisons in the previous matchup, the Huskies were looking to strike first and take control of the game. Despite a great opening effort from the Dogs, it would be Norah Collins of the Bisons who would strike first just 8 minutes into the opening bout.
The Huskies, looking to turn up the intensity found themselves in penalty trouble with
Makenna Stevens going to sit for 2 minutes, giving the Bisons their first Power Play of the game. With the Bisons converting on 27.8% on the powerplay this season (4th in U SPORTS), they were able to put another one past Huskies goalie
Colby Wilson extending their lead to 2-0 just half way through the first.
Manitoba was able to bury another one thanks to Seanna Price just mere minutes before the close of what was a lop sided start to the battle.
The odds were stacked up against the Huskies yet again going into second period as the Bisons found themselves on the powerplay on two separate occasions within the first 10 minutes. Not willing to go down without a fight, the Huskies penalty kill worked double time and were able to fend off the onslaught of Bisons shots that came their way thanks to some great work between the pipes by Wilson.
After some great chances and drives it was the Huskies who found themselves on the receiving end of another Bisons goal from Sadie Keller in the 19th minute of the period, bringing the Bisons lead to 4-0 going into the 3rd.
After Kellers goal extended the Bisons lead to 4-0 late in the second, it was going to be an uphill battle for the Dogs going into the third. The Huskies Power Play got their first taste of action as the Bisons Glory Plett was sent to sit for 2 minutes on a hooking call.
Despite the Huskies best efforts and a few very close calls for the Bisons, the game was back to full strength with Bisons lead intact.
The situation was looking dire for the Huskies but there was a glimmer of hope for the Dogs to get on the board as the Bisons would take another penalty resulting in a late Huskies Power Play. The Dogs fought to the very end but weren't unable to top the Bisons with an end result of 4-0.
