WHKY: Saskatchewan Sweep of Manitoba Bisons

SASKATOON, SK – The Saskatchewan Huskies welcomed the Manitoba Bisons to Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday afternoon for game two of their home opener weekend. The Dogs would end the series with a Camryn Drever shutout and the 4-0 win.

The first period was give and go as both teams struggled offensively to find the net. Frustrations were high as penalties dominated the ice, first with a Huskie hooking penalty for Jacquelyne Chief, followed by a Manitoba roughing penalty to Jena Barscello and bodychecking assessed to Dana Goertzen. With three power plays in the first period, neither team was able to capitalize, ending in a scoreless first period.

The Huskies dominated the second period, scoring three of their four goals. Second year, Jayde Cadieux scored her first goal of the season with a quick assist from Jessica Patterson at 11:51.

A penalty would give Manitoba the power play opportunity, but the Huskies defence stood strong. At even strength, Saskatchewan's Kate Ball would net her second on the season with an assist from Taylor Wilkinson at 16:06 in the period to give the Huskies the 2-0 lead.

The two barely had time to celebrate before they switched gears, with a goal from Taylor Wilkinson less than a minute later, assisted by Kate Ball. This duo is going to be one to watch this season, as they make the most of every opportunity that comes their way.

The third period played out much like the first, with penalties raining down on both teams as they pushed to find the net. Saskatchewan's Sophie Lalor would net her third goal of the weekend, at 5:06 in the third period, increasing the Huskies lead to 4-0. Lalor adds to her two goals and two assists from Friday night and will be a key player in the Huskies offence for the entire season.

The Huskies outshot the Bisons 29-24, with Camryn Drever recording her first shutout of the season, keeping 24 shots out of the Huskies net.

Manitoba was a bit more disciplined on the penalties, with five for a total of 10 penalty minutes. Saskatchewan would end with seven penalties for 14 penalty minutes.

The Huskies start the season with a strong message to Canada West with a 2-0 record.
