SASKATOON, SK – It was an unforgettable night at Merlis Belsher Place this evening as the Saskatchewan Huskies took on the Trinity Western Spartans in game two of the weekend series. The Huskies would grab the 2-1 shootout win in their second game of the year.
The first period would be a defensive battle between the two teams as neither team would find the back of the net. The Huskies would outshoot the Spartans 11-8. TWU was sent to the box twice in the first period, both times for interference.
At 10:19 into the second period, TWU's Olivia Leier would head to the penalty box and would be assessed a five-minute major for a checking to the head penalty on Saskatchewan's
Isabella Pozzi. Pozzi would return to the ice late in the third period.
Kendra Zuchotzki would grab her fourth goal of the season at 12:15 into the second with the assist from
Kate Ball on the powerplay. TWU would answer with a goal of their own at 16:57, thanks to a goal from McKenzie Mayo, her fourth of the season.
It was a tie game heading into the third period, which would play out much like the first period, with neither team able to capitalize offensively. The game would head into overtime tied at 1-1. Huskies goaltender
Colby Wilson and Spartans goaltender Kate Fawcett would see both teams through two overtime periods, stopping anything that came their way and sending the game to a shootout.
Shootout Action
Saskatchewan and TWU would keep both goaltenders in for the shootout, as both Wilson and Fawcett had impressive performances tonight.
Sophie Lalor would be up first for Saskatchewan in the shootout, slipping one past Fawcett to put the Huskies up 1-0. TWU would send Brooklyn Anderson out first, but she was stopped dead by Wilson.
Second up for the Huskies was
Kelsey Hall, who wouldn't be able to get one past Fawcett. The Spartans went with Amy Potomack for the second shot but she was also stopped by Wilson, who would save 32 of 33 on the evening. It was
Kendra Zuchotzki who would net the game winning shootout goal, her second goal of the evening, giving the Huskies the 2-1 victory.
