Bourassa hat trick hoists Huskies over Griffins

SASKATOON — In what was one of the most memorable nights in the history of Merlis Belsher Place, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team.

Bailee Bourassa was a part of what made the night so special. The fifth-year forward, who is playing in the final regular-season weekend  of her Huskies career, registered a hat trick — the first of her U SPORTS career.

"I'm so happy for her and I'm so proud of her. She works her butt off all the time and to see her get her first hattrick in six years — that's pretty special," said Huskies goaltender Camryn Drever.

"She was skating motivated tonight. She was on fire tonight," said Huskies head coach Steve Kook. "For her to get three on a night like this, it was pretty good."

Nicole Fry opened the scoring at the midway point of the first period on what was a beautiful curl and drag, that beat Natalie Bender. From there it was all Bourassa, who scored the next three goals, as she provided all the scoring the Dogs needed to pick up the win.

Aryn Chambers broke Drever's shutout bid with just 2.3 seconds remaining in regulation, which got the visitors on the board.

Nonetheless it was a dominant performance from Saskatchewan, who outshot MacEwan 37-17 in the hockey game. The victory ensured Bourassa wasn't the only member of the Huskies to record a milestone, as Kook recorded his 200th career victory as the program's head coach.

"I think it was pretty special to see Steve get his 200th game," said Drever. "He's definitely the glue that keeps us team together. He cares for every single one of us and wants us to do our best always. He's a pretty special guy."

Despite the shutout breaking tally late in the third, it was an impressive outing for Drever, who made 16 saves and helped the Huskies move to 10-5-2 with the win, climbing into third-place in the conference.

With the loss, MacEwan falls to 6-9-12 and will look to bounce back on Saturday night.

Part of what made the night so special for Bourassa was her involvement in the night that was. Bourassa helped organize Play for a Cure night — the 13th in program history. The Huskies honoured Rhodes McNairn, a patient treated by Bourassa who is a full-time nurse, and he was in attendance to see a historic night for the Weyburn product.

"I can definitely say this will be a game I'll never, ever forget," said Bourassa. "I'm kind of at a loss for words. I couldn't have asked for a better night for anyone."

"Every battle and every play I went into tonight, I just thought of Rhodes and his battle. I just said 'I have to do this for him.' I just can't believe it worked out the way it did. It was honestly so special."

With the victory, Saskatchewan won their fourth-straight, which for Bourassa, is a result of what she is seeing take shape around her.

"I honestly think that we're truly just coming together as a team. Everyone is playing for the team. There's no individuality out there anymore," said Bourassa.

Bourassa and company will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday in the second-half of the back-to-back, with puck drop slated for 5:00 p.m. at Merlis Belsher Place.
