CALGARY, AB - For the fourth time this season, overtime was needed to decide a winner between the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team and the Saskatchewan Huskies. The Dinos would end up winning 3-2 in overtime against the Huskies on Saturday night. The Huskies will head into the winter break with a 10-6-2 record.
The Huskies started the scoring when defender
Meg Dyer took a shot from the blue line that was tipped in by
Kenzie Lausberg from the top of the slot to give Saskatchewan an early lead. The goal was her first of the season. However, the Dinos responded less than five minutes later when Brooke Dennett got the puck on her stick in the neutral zone and drove toward the net. She found Annaliese Meier who took a shot that was stopped, but Elizabeth Lang was wide open in front of the net and collected the rebound for her eighth of the campaign.
The last few minutes of the first period and opening minutes of the second saw both teams play a physical game, utilizing their bodies but also taking some penalties. At the halfway mark of the second frame, Calgary had a great chance to take the lead when Sydney Mercier was centred in front of the net and ripped a shot but the puck just seemed to trickle off the crossbar.
The Huskies finally capitalized on a power play with
Isabella Pozzi taking a shot from the blue line that was blocked but after fighting through a scramble in front of the net,
Kara Kondrat managed to finish the rebound and collect her third goal of the year.
But, yet again, the Dinos quickly responded to even the score with Brette Kerley driving down the right side of the ice into the Huskies' zone and taking a shot that was stopped but Jada Leung was following her teammate down the middle of the ice and collected the rebound to notch her first goal as a Dino.
The third period saw intense back-and-forth action between the two teams, including Huskies goaltender
Camryn Drever coming up big and making some crucial saves to keep the game even.
Nevertheless, 60 minutes just was not enough time to settle the score between the evenly matched opponents, forcing the game into OT.
Finally, in the second overtime frame, the Dinos ended the game by speeding down the ice and capitalizing on a breakaway.
Saskatchewan returns to the ice on January 6 & 7 as they play host to the TWU Spartans at Merlis Belsher Place. Tickets are available at
