SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team tied a program record with their seventh-consecutive win in a 3-0 victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Friday, Jan. 31 at Merlis Belsher Place.
Emma Nutter's first career game-winning goal was the difference on the night as she tallied a powerplay blast in the first period.
Kennedy Brown tacked on an insurance marker with just under three minutes remaining in the contest - her third goal in her last four games - while
Jordyn Holmes buried an empty-netter to score her first career U SPORTS goal.
Huskies netminder
Camryn Drever recorded her third shutout of the season, with a 22-save performance, earning her the night's first-star.
At the opposite end of the ice, Erin Fargey stopped 26 of 28 shots on the night, but was on the losing end of the contest.
With the win, Saskatchewan rises to 49 points on the season, keeping pace with the Calgary Dinos who the Huskies are competing with for second place in the Canada West. Meanwhile, Manitoba's playoff hopes take a hit, as they now sit seven points out of a playoff spot with just three regular-season games remaining.
The Huskies opened the scoring midway through the first, taking advantage of their first powerplay of the night. It was a pair of defencemen connecting to find twine, as
Isabella Pozzi feathered across a pass to Nutter, who one-timed a blast past Fargey for her second of the season.
Saskatchewan would take the one-goal lead into the second period and they continued to control play in the early moments of the second. However, a persistent Manitoba attack was able to force a penalty, giving the Bisons the momentum for much of the second frame. Unfortunately for the visitors, Drever was equal to the task and ended up stopping all eight shots fired her way in the second period.
After the Huskies were able to weather the storm throughout the period, the home side capitalized late in the third. Brown, who showed off her tremendous speed throughout the evening, came onto a feed from Fry and roofed a wrister over the shoulder of Fargey to give Saskatchewan a two-goal lead.
Just over a minute later, with the Bisons net empty in favour of an extra attacker, the Huskies sealed the three-points, as Holmes shovelled home a backhander into the open cage to make it 3-0.
Saskatchewan will look to extend their winning streak to eight tomorrow night, as they search for the series sweep, while Manitoba will fight for their playoff lives tomorrow night.
