CALGARY - The Mount Royal University Cougars hosted the University of Saskatchewan Huskies for their second match of the weekend on Sunday evening. Mount Royal came away with a 3-1 victory, elated with their success after facing a tough loss the previous night.
The Cougars earned their first goal of the night as forward Anna Purschke swept the puck into the corner of the net. As the first period closed, the Huskies were regrouping to close the gap.
Halfway through the second period, the Huskies left the net open on a penalty. The puck got away from them on an errant pass, skating all the way down the ice into the empty net.
The Huskies quickly got their stride back as
Bailee Bourassa shot a goal past Cougars' goalie Kaitlyn Ross just minutes after their previous slip.
The two teams began to get frustrated as a scuffle broke out in front of the Huskies net with eight minutes remaining in the second period, resulting in a Cougars penalty. The period ended with a Cougars 2-1 lead.
Third period showed some fierce rivalry as each team fought for control. Saskatchewan's goalie
Camryn Drever stood strong, facing some tough opportunities from the Cougars.
With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Purschke snuck in behind the Huskies powerplay to score her second goal for the night, bringing the Cougars further into the lead.
The Huskies pulled Drever for a final push to close the gap but were tripped up by a penalty with just seconds remaining.
