University of Saskatchewan forward Kaitlin Willoughby was one of 22 players named to the 2017 Winter University Canadian women's hockey team by the CIS Friday.
The 2017 Winter Universiade is set for January 29 to February 8 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Willoughby becomes the fourth Huskie women's hockey player to don the Canadian colours at a Universiade. The group includes Breanne George, Cara Wooster and Julia Flinton.
The fourth-year forward made a splash in the CIS in 2013-14 helping guide the Huskies to their first-ever Canada West Championship and a bronze medal at the CIS Championship. In the season, she was named the conference and CIS rookie of the year. In three seasons with the Huskies, the Prince Albert, Sask., native has tallied 31 goals and 40 assists.
The 22-player roster features 20 members who skated for Team CIS at Hockey Canada's Women's Development Camp in August. Eight players come from the Canada West conference, along with seven from OUA, five from the RSEQ and two from AUS. The defending national champion Montreal Carabins lead the way with four selections.
Canada will compete in Group A alongside China, Great Britain and host Kazakhstan. Group B consists of the defending champion Russia, Japan and the United States.
Behind the bench, University of Guelph head coach Rachel Flanagan, who made the selections following development camp, will be accompanied by team leader and video coach Rick Traugott, assistant coaches Kelly Paton (Western) and Shaun Reagan (Waterloo), equipment manager Jean Huynh (McGill), and therapist Natalie Paladino (Windsor).
