Box Score

Canada West men's hockey will take a 20-day hiatus to allow athletes and coaches to participate in the World Universiade in Granada, Spain.

The Huskies will travel to meet the Mount Royal Cougars in a Canada West quarter-final when action resumes, while Alberta will host the lowest seed from the quarter-final round in a semifinal matchup.

Alberta captain Kruise Reddick opened the scoring in the game at 7:32 in the first period on a 2-on-1. He scored on a backhand shot top shelf over a sprawling Huskie netminder Jordon Cooke.  A T.J. Foster shot 1:29 later hit Cooke on the helmet and flipped past the goal line at 9:03.

Johnny Lazo gave Alberta the 3-0 lead on with a power play goal at 6:49 in the second. Lazo was able to get his stick on a Reddick shot from the point.  Jordan Hickmott added the insurance goal on another Alberta 2-on-1 rush at 2:06 in the third.

Saskatchewan made a bid for the comeback scoring two quick goals midway through the final frame. Sean Aschim tallied at 8:04 when his shot bounced off an Alberta defenceman and past goaltender Luke Siemens. Michael Sofillas tallied at 11:47 on a backhand shot just under the crossbar.

Siemens made 24 saves in the win for the Golden Bears, while Cooke stopped 39 for the Huskies at the other end of the ice for the Saskatchewan.

Canada West postseason hockey begins February 20.

Game Notes: The Huskie men's hockey team raised $3,250 (in person and online) for Marty's Men, a Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life team in support of alumni Cody Smuk. Smuk was diagnosed with cancer just weeks after helping the Huskies to the University Cup final in 2014. Smuk was in attendance for a ceremonial puck drop.
