HUSKIES DROP MATCH TO GRIFFINS

Box Score

The MacEwan University Griffins served notice they are ready to compete in Canada West. With a 1-0 victory on Sunday, the first year team sent the University of Saskatchewan Huskies home with only a single point on the weekend.

Applying pressure from the outset, the Huskies earned the early chance, stemming from a free kick opportunity from Erica Hindmarsh that sailed just over the crossbar.

The Huskies game plan clearly had a physical element with Erica Hindmarsh earning a yellow in the 17th minute, the first of the Huskies four cards in the game.

Box Score

The skilled midfielder would not be deterred, narrowly missing a shot wide in the 25th minute in an aggressive play where Griffins keeper Rebecca Reif and Hindmarsh would collide.

Hindmarsh would continue to be a marked force for the Huskies for the duration of the game, registering 11 shots.

The first half would end in a stalemate 0-0, a direct reflection of the previous day's game.

In the second half, the Griffins' discipline would be tested and the home team would be pushed to the limit by the experienced Huskies.

Finding another gear in the second half, the two teams matched intensity levels and the Griffins' began to earn their scoring chances. The Griffins Kaily Mohn used her speed on a dangerous run along the sideline in the 48th minute, building momentum for the home team.

Hindmarsh would continue to create issues for the Griffins, beating defender Kayla Evans out wide before getting off a quality shot that was narrowly deflected wide by Reif to keep the game tied.

The Griffins would have a quality chance of their own when Marlea Moroz rang an outside shot off the crossbar, grazing the outstretched keepers hands and out of bounds.

Around the 60th minute, the intensity notable picked up again, as did the level of physical play.

In the 78th minute, the tides would change in the Griffins favour, when Jennifer Miller received her second yellow card of the match placing her team in a man down situation.

The Griffins would capitalize when Erika Vecchio created space along the sideline, beating the defender and keeper with a crossing pass that was tapped in by Kassandra Jajczay.

Despite a closing flurry, from the Huskies, it would be all the Griffins would need to capture the win and move into third place in the division, with two games in hand.

Jajczay was named the player of the game for the Griffins, while Hindmarsh earned the honour for the Huskies.

This was the first double-header weekend for the Griffins (4-1-1) where they faced the same team. They will now head on the road to take on the 2-5-1 Mount Royal Cougars.

The Huskies (3-2-3) will return home to host the (1-5-2) University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday and Sunday. All youth will be admitted free to the matches.
