Box Score CALGARY – While they may have allowed their first goal of the season, the University of Calgary Dinos undefeated record stayed in tack, thanks to an impressive three-goal comeback in the second half to earn a 3-3 tie against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday Sept. 20.
Both teams move to 3-0-2 with the tie at West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
Box Score
The Huskies were the first to strike in the game and appeared to have a hold on the Dinos in the second half where they grabbed a 3-0 lead. The Dinos however rallied back to close the gap, scoring to make it 3-1 in the 63rd minute and again just three minutes after that. It came down to the wire but the Dinos pulled off the comeback in the 84th minute with a tying goal from Jordan Smith.
Grabbing a hold of opportunity is exactly what the Dinos did. It appeared the Huskies controlled the first half of the game and capitalized on their opportunity by netting the first goal of the game when Erica Hindmarsh headed the ball past Calgary netminder Samantha Chang-Foidl. This was the first goal against the Dinos all season.
Calgary continued to grind away in an effort to change momentum but they couldn't hold Hindmarsh during a scramble in the box. Hindmarsh found the ball and passed to Jenelle Zapski who netted her first of the game in the 50th minute. The two Huskies were on fire and connected again just four minutes later at the 54th minute. Zapski received a great cross crease pass from Hindmarsh and claimed her second goal of the half.
Momentum began to turn for the Dinos when Flannery put some substitutions in the game. Amy Hockings and Kaely Biring came off the bench and paid immediate dividends for the home side. In the 63rd minute, Biring beat a defender into the box and had a shot blocked. Hockings was in the right spot though to corral the rebound, putting it off her head and into the top left corner.
Hockings wasn't done there, feeding a pass to fellow forward Smith who walked in and fired the ball into the bottom left side.
Neither team was backing down. Calgary continued to push their offence and it proved beneficial in the 84th minute when Smith claimed her second and game-tying goal on a pass from Hockings.
Calgary outshot Saskatchewan 15-12.
Both teams will face off against each other once more tomorrow, Sunday September 21st at noon on the West Varsity Pitch.
