HUSKIES FINISH REGULAR SEASON; HOST WESMEN IN QUARTER-FINAL

The No. 4 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskie men's soccer team closed out the Canada West regular season with a 2-2 draw with the Mount Royal Cougars on the road Sunday afternoon.

With the draw, the Huskies finish the season 9-1-2 and in first place in the conferenc prairie division. Mount Royal closed 2-8-2 and out of the playoff picture.

Saskatchewan will host the Winnipeg Wesmen in a Canada West quarter-final next weekend. It is the first home playoff date for the Huskies since 2003 when the Canada West Final Four was hosted on a rotational basis. It is the third straight season the Huskies have made a postseason appearance and fourth in five seasons.

Rookie Bryce Marinus scored both goals for Saskatchewan. The Comox, B.C. native opened the scoring in the 28th minute. He added his second in the 59th minute. Both goals were unassisted.

Mount Royal scored its two goals in the 90th minute. The first from Kyel Rushton and the second from Nigel Stebanuk.

Greg Buckley made two saves for the Huskies in his first start of the season, while David Thalheimer made five for Mount Royal.

Saskatchewan's quarter-final is slated for 2:15 p.m. on October 26 on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park. Should the Huskies win the playoff match, Saskatchewan would host the Canada West Final Four on October 31-November 1. The top two teams from the Final Four will advance to the CIS Championship.
