SASKATOON, Sask. – For the second consecutive night, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Regina Cougars in lopsided fashion. After earning a 6-1 win Friday in Regina, the Dogs doubled down against their provincial rivals, shutting out the Cougars 5-0 to earn another U-Prairie Challenge, presented by SaskMilk, win.
The victory sees the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked Huskies improve to 11-4-1 at the midway point of the season while the loss drops the Cougars to 2-14-0.
In a fast-paced opening period, the Huskies got pucks to the net early and often and would finish the frame with a 16-11 shooting advantage. Despite being limited in their attempts, the Cougars created some early high danger chances but Saskatchewan netminder
Jordan Kooy stood tall, making some key saves.
With just under six minutes remaining,
Dawson Holt found
Josh Pillar up ice, sparking an odd man rush. Pillar would take the puck to his back hand before squeezing the puck past the outstretched pad of Regina goalie Justen Maric for his fourth of the season.
The second period saw the Huskies slowly take over control of the game but could not come up with an answer for Maric early in the frame.
Thanks to a late Regina tripping penalty though, Saskatchewan doubled their lead after
Chantz Petruic found
Chase Bertholet wide open in the slot. Bertholet added to an already strong weekend, finishing the two-game series against the Cougars with a goal and three assists.
Just under three minutes later, the Bertholet returned the favour, setting Petruic up for his conference-leading 16th goal of the season.
Looking to put the Cougars away early in the third, Saskatchewan picked up the pace in search of another strong finish.
Former ECHLer
Conner Roulette beat Maric glove-side for his eighth of the season before
Dawson Holt found him wide open on the back door five minutes later for the forward's first multi-goal game as a Huskie. Roulette would finish the game with two goals and two assists, bringing his season total to 22, good enough for sixth in the conference.
Kooy would hold things down at the other end of the ice for the remainder of the third, earning his first shutout of the season with a 26-save performance.
Saskatchewan now heads into the break in third-place in Canada West's East Division with 23 points, one shy of the MRU Cougars and seven back of the division-leading Calgary Dinos.
