During the 1996 Canada West football season, the Huskies took a bite out of their western opponents en route to a 7-1 record. In the postseason they attacked the rest of the country, winning the Vanier Cup with a 31-12 victory over St. Francis Xavier. Brent Schneider was named MVP of the game and Warren Muzika the player of the game. To get to the Vanier Cup, they defeated the UBC Thunderbirds in the Hardy Cup 37-16 and the Guelph Gryphons 33-9 in the Churchill Bowl, where Joe Saul was named MVP.
Huskie players were well represented in awards categories winning five trophies at the Canada West level – MVP Brent Schneider; Outstanding Defensive Player Trent Bagnall; Rookie of the Year David Murza; Outstanding Lineman James Repesse and Coach of the Year Brian Towriss.
Brent Schneider Jaret Rennie, Scott Flory, Trent Bagnall, Trevor Ludtke, Warren Muzika, James Repesse, Joe Saul, Mike Stewart, Jason Weber and Matt Kellett were conference all-stars. Brent Schneider, Joe Saul, James Repesse, Trent Bagnall, Jaret Rennie and Warren Muzika all went on to be named CIAU All-Canadians.
The Vanier Cup marked the Huskies second title in history.
