Merle Byrnes, a graduate of Eston High School, enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan in 1955 (B.S.A, 1959) in 1955.
Merle was captain and MVP of the Huskies for two of his five seasons with the hockey team. In 29 games, he had 17 goals and 31 points.
In addition to playing hockey, he excelled in curling and baseball at the provincial level.
Merle was awarded the Rusty McDonald Cup in 1960 for sportsmanship, athletics and academics among University athletes.
