Athletic Wall of Fame History

vb

In the spring of 1907 the Saskatchewan Legislature approved the University Act creating the University of Saskatchewan. The intial classes were held in the Drinkle Building in downtown Saskatoon in September 1909. The history of sport at the University of Saskatchewan extends back to that inaugural academic year with the formation of inter-college competition and the appearance of a varsity hockey team.

In subsequent years as the permanent campus developed, so too did the number of interuniversity sports teams with which student-athletes could compete. Through the years student-athletes at the University of Saskatchewan have competed in more than 20 sports, including badminton, basketball, bowling, boxing, cross country, running, curling, diving, fencing, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, rugby, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

The University's "varsity" teams, named Huskies in 1932, have afforded student-athletes with the opportunity to compete at ahigh level for their university against other post secondary institutions in Western Canada and across the country. Huskie Athletics has provided hundreds of students with the opportunity to develop their personal and professional knowledge  and life skills with elite athletic competition to become well-rounded student-athletes. wresting

The University of Saskatchewan Athletic Wall of Fame provides recognition to those outstanding individuals and teams, who have not only demonstrated excellence in their athletic endeavours, but also have brough distinction to the University.

These exceptional individuals have been selected by the Wall of Fame selection committee after having met the criteria for their specific category - athlete, builder or team. Wall of Fame inductions have happened in 1984, 1987, 1994, 2001 and 2007.
