WINNIPEG - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-22) Saturday evening in the final match of a weekend series in Winnipeg.
The Huskies (6-10) leave Winnipeg with a split in their weekend action against the Wesmen (2-16). Winnipeg won the series opener in a five set thriller Friday night.
The trio of Emmalyn Copping, Emily Humbert and Emily Koshinsky led the way for the Huskies finishing the match with a combined 38 kills on the night. Copping led the way with 16 kills and added 10 digs. Humbert finished with 12 kills while Koshinsky added 10 kills. Taylor Annala finished the match with 17 digs.
Danika Picklyk led the Wesmen with eight kills and 14 digs. Alex Rose added seven kills and libero Madison Fyvie finished with 10 kills.
Winnipeg opened the match on a positive note racing out to a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout of the first set. Winnipeg was able to spread the offense around with Karissa Kuhr and Alex Rose each coming up with a pair of kills in the early stages. The Huskies found their groove soon after, scoring six straight points, three on kills by Copping to take a 19-17 lead late in the set. Winnipeg closed the gap to 22-21 but the Huskies closed out the set scoring three of the final four points to win the set 25-22.
The Huskies fell behind early in the second set (7-4) but another 6-0 run lifted them to a 10-7 lead. Saskatchewan went into t the technical leading 16-10 and eventually closed out the set by a margin of 25-16.
In set number three, the Huskies once again had the lead at the technical break by a score of 16-13. Winnipeg closed the gap to two points on three occasions late in the set but the visitors were able to hang on to win the third set 25-22 to close out the match.
The Huskies will be on the road next weekend at UBC Okanagan. Winnipeg will have the bye and return to action on Feb 10-11 with a visit to Thompson Rivers.
