Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener To Spartans


SASKATOON - Trinity Western University's Danae Derksen tallied two goals to lead the Spartans to a 4-0 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday afternoon on Field 7 in Saskatoon's PotashCorp Park.

The third-year forward scored in the 62nd and 86th minute. Derksen captialized on a steal in front of the Huskies net beating keeper Kyleigh Vause in the bottom corner for her first goal. Her second goal sailed into the top corner sealing the victory.

With the win the No. 4 ranked Spartans move to 2-0, while the Huskies open the 2016 Canada West women's soccer season 0-1.

Trinity Western's Rachel Hutchinson opened the scoring in the 15th minute when she sent a ball from Siena Kashima into an open Huskie net. The Spartans extended the lead in the 45th minute when a Kathleen Chin ball fit into the top of the net from outside the 20-yard box.

Spartan keeper Ally Williamson and Vause each made one save in the match. Trinity Western tallied eight shots in the game, while Saskatchewan recorded six.

The Huskies remain at home to host the Fraser Valley Cascades Sunday, while the Spartans travel to Regina to meet the Cougars.
