CALGARY – In the second game in two nights, the University of Calgary Dinos responded with a full 60 minute effort, defeating the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, 3-1, Saturday night, January 14th at the Father David Bauer in Calgary.
Dinos captain Megan Grenon opened the scoring late in the first, as she snuck a long distance wrister past Jasey Rae Book, making it 1-0 for the home team. Grenon's goal was her first, and only the fifth power play goal Calgary has scored all season.
Just 27 seconds after Calgary's first goal, Calgary forward Sara Craven went to the net off the rush following a Sage Desjardins wrist shot, and backhanded the puck past Book, as the Dinos took a quick two goal lead.
Dinos goaltender Kelsey Roberts, who made her first start of 2017, was sharp in the first, making 11 saves including two saves in the final six seconds of the period, keeping the lead at two.
Starting the second period on the power play, the Huskies failed to convert on what became a 5-on-3, which allowed the Dinos a bigger opening. Sara Craven, added her second of the game and third of the season, as from behind the goal line, banked the puck in off of Book. Craven's goal ended her night in net, as she surrendered three goals on 11 shots, with Cassidy Hendricks coming in of relief.
The Huskies cut the lead to two near the end of the period, as Lauren Zary off the rush fed a streaking Kori Herner, who perfectly deflected the pass through the legs of Roberts, making it 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Coming into the third period, after heavily outshooting the Dinos through the first two periods, the Huskies couldn't generate much offense, as Roberts only had to make six saves to close out the Dinos victory.
The Huskies will head back home to play the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds next weekend.
The Dinos will play a home-and-home series against the University of Alberta Pandas, travelling to Edmonton on Friday, Jan 20th. Before returning home for the second game of the series on Saturday, Jan 21st at 6PM.
