CALGARY – Kaitlin Willoughby, Hannah Heisler and Rachel Johnson scored for the Saskatchewan Huskies as they defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 3-2 on Saturday night at Flames Community Arenas. Nicolette Seper and Tianna Ko notched goals for Mount Royal in the loss.
After being shutout on Friday night, the Huskies got on the board early as Kaitlin Willoughby opened the scoring at the 9:18 mark. Bailee Bourassa stole the puck from the defender in the corner and centred it to Willoughby who was standing alone in front of the goal. Willoughby quickly slid it past Zoe DeBeauville in the Cougars' goal.
Ko nearly ties it with just over five minutes left in the first. The first year forward stepped over the blue line and ripped a shot between two the two Saskatchewan defenders. The shot whistled over the shoulder of Jasey Rae Book but rang off the crossbar.
Fellow Cougars rookie, Nicolete Seper, took matters into her own hands. Seper went hard to the outside and cut in across the goalmouth. She then used her long reach to slide the puck between the legs of Book to tie the game at one.
Just seconds later the Huskies regained the lead. A defensive mistake in the neutral zone sent Kaitlin Willoughby and Hannah Heisler in on a two-on-one. Willoughby saucered the pass over to Heisler who ripped a wrist shot top corner on DeBeauville.
Saskatchewan dominated the play for most of the second period. They held the puck deep in the Cougars' zone for the majority of the period but rookie goaltender Zoe DeBeauville stood her ground in the Cougars' goal.
Kori Herner nearly extended the Huskies' lead when the puck found her in the high slot. Herner struck a one-timer that was labelled for the top corner. DeBeauville flashed the leather and stole a sure goal away from the Huskies' forward. DeBeauville's stellar goaltending kept the Cougars within one heading into the final period.
Mount Royal tied it early in the third when Tianna Ko was sprung on a breakaway. Ko walked in and ripped a wrist shot off the post and in past Book to tie the game at two.
The Huskies regained the lead on a scramble in front of the Cougars' goal. Kaitlin Willoughby drove hard to the net, leaving DeBeauville down and out. Rachel Johnson then pounced on the rebound, flipping it over the Cougars' outstretched goaltender.
Johnson's goal would hold up to be the game winner as the Huskies salvaged a split on their southern Alberta road trip.
Mount Royal falls to 7-9-0-2 and Saskatchewan improves to 8-6-2-2 with the victory.
The Huskies will return back to southern Alberta next weekend when they will play the last place Calgary Dinos. The series begins Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena at 7:00pm MST.
