WINNIPEG – The No. 1 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 66–48 Saturday afternoon at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.
With the win the Huskies remain unbeaten with a record of 14-0. Winnipeg with the loss drops to 4-10.
Winnipeg was led by Faith Hezekiah's double-double consisting of 14 points and 16 rebounds. Megan Noonan added 10 points. Kerri Kuzbyt had eight points and seven assists.
After yesterday's contest that saw the Huskies drain 19 three-pointers, Winnipeg made adjustments and the results showed early on. The Huskies held a slim 20-13 lead after the opening 10 minutes, as Winnipeg's defensive play was evident.
The second quarter, things turned around for the Huskies. Saskatchewan opened up the quarter on a 7-0 run and went on to outscore the Wesmen 22-8 in the frame to take a 42-21 lead into the halftime break.
Winnipeg cut into the Huskies lead in the second half outscoring the visitors 27-24 but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Huskies completed the weekend sweep with the 66-48 victory.
Saskatchewan will be home next Friday and Saturday against Brandon. Winnipeg will take on the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night in the 25th Annual Duckworth Challenge at the U of M. The series will switch to the Duckworth Centre next Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
