NEW WESTMINSTER – With 18 of the last 20 national champions in men's and women's volleyball combined hailing from Canada West, there's little doubt which U Sports conference is expected to lead the way again this season.

The 2016-17 Canada West men's and women's volleyball regular season schedule opens this Friday, with no shortage of conference and national championship contenders set to take the court.

COMPLETE 2016-17 WOMEN'S SCHEDULE

Expected to lead the way on both the men's and women's sides are Alberta and Trinity Western, who were pegged as the frontrunners in the annual pre-season coaches polls.

On the men's side, the Alberta Golden Bears (138 points) earned the first-place nod in the poll ahead of the Trinity Western Spartans (137 points) by the slimmest of margins, while on the women's side the roles were reversed, with the Spartans earning first (143 points) over the Pandas (126 points).

Along with Alberta and Trinity Western, Calgary is anticipated to be a power in both men's and women's play, as the Dinos slotted in fourth (men) and fifth (women) respectively in the polls, which are selected by conference coaches.
