The University of Saskatchewan Huskie men's volleyball team begins its quest to return the CIS Championships when they open the post-season on the road against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.
The Huskies qualified for the playoffs after finishing in fifth place in the Canada West standings. The Wesmen earned the right to host after clinching fourth place in the standings thanks to an upset of the previously undefeated Alberta Golden Bears in their final match of the season.
The best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series gest underway Friday, February 26 at 7 p.m. with Game 2 to follow on Saturday at 7 p.m. If necessary, a decisive Game 3 will be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday. All matches will take place at Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg and can be watched live on canadawest.tv.
The two teams split their weekend series in Saskatoon right before the semester break. The Wesmen took Friday night's opener on November 27, 3-0. The Huskies responded for a 3-2 win on Saturday.
The post-season couldn't come at a better time for the Huskies as they enter the playoffs one of the conference's hottest teams. Saskatchewan has rattled off six straight wins and posted a 9-3 record since the calendar turned to 2016.
Winnipeg enters the series having won two of their last six matches, but the Wesmen faced a tough schedule down the home stretch of the season. The Wesmen posted an unblemished 6-0 record in January and have pushed the match to the full five sets in each of their last three losses. Winnipeg came up big in its final match of the season handing Alberta (23-1) their only loss of the season in order to clinch home court in the first round.
