Three First Half Goals Lifts Cougars Over Huskies

Mount Royal University's three goals in the first half was enough to lift them over the hometown and defending Canada West Champion the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 4-2 on Sunday on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park.

Mount Royal forward Cody Cook tallied three points in the opening half with assists in the 7th and 30th minute followed by a goal of his own in the 44th as the half drew to a close. With the three points today Cook now leads the Canada West in points and assists.

The Cougars opened the scoring off a cross field pass from Cook to the streaking Tyrin Hutchings who pushed a header past Huskie goalkeeper Greg Buckley. Mount Royal got on the board again after breaking through the bulk of the Huskie defense leaving fullback Fabian Dale all alone as Cody Cook was streaking down the field with Lewis Odosa in a textbook two-on-one. An easy pass from the streaking Cook left a wide open net for Odosa who put it past the Huskie keeper in the 30th minute. Cook got a goal of his own in the final minutes of the half when a defensive miscue allowed Hutchings to feed Cook in front of the Huskie net. Cook immediately put the ball past Buckley to find the top far corner and give the Cougars a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Cougars continued their dominance to start the second half after Jack Vickers played the ball into Caden Sawatsky just feet from the goal line; Sawatzky chipped it past both the keeper and the defenders, placing the ball just inside the far post to give the Cougars a four goal advantage.

The Huskies finally answered back in the 74th minute when Garret Peters found Mitch Bauche on the attack. After stepping around two defenders Bauche put the ball past the Cougar keeper to put Saskatchewan on the board. Bauche would find the net one more time on a shot off a Jacob Powell corner kick in added time.

With the win the Cougars move to 6-2 on the season while the Huskies fall to 3-3-2.

Saskatchewan hosts the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns next Saturday, October 10 at 2:15 p.m. on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park. Mount Royal will visit the University of Calgary Dinos next Saturday.
