The University of Saskatchewan Huskies scored all of their goals in the first half to defeat the University of Winnipeg 4-1 on a warm, blustery Saturday afternoon at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
Saskatchewan wasted no time hitting the scoreboard. First year midfielder Marcello Gonzalez picked up his own rebound to score his second goal of the season in the 2nd minute of play to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
The Huskies poured it on in the 23rd minute scoring a pair of goals seconds apart. Second year midfield Tyler Redl notched his third goal of the season and seconds later Gonzalez scored his second marker of the contest to put the Huskies in front by a 3-0 margin.
First year midfield Avery Michael scored his second goal of the season in the 30th minute to put the Huskies ahead 4-0 heading into the halftime break.
Winnipeg broke the shutout in the 50th minute when third year defender/midfielder Enrique Garcea scored on a penalty kick to cut the Huskies lead to 4-1.
The Huskies were able to hold off any Wesmen attack in the final stages to close out the contest in their favor.
Third year goalkeeper Greg Buckley made seven saves for the Huskies. Wesmen goalkeepers Joshua Partaker and Logan Grzenda made three saves combined.
The Huskies with the win improve to 3-2 on the season. Winnipeg falls to 1-4.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday afternoon. Match time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
