Alberta Stifles Huskie Comeback

A second half goal by Niko Jankovic lifted the visiting No. 9 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears to a 3-2 win over the No. 8 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday in Saskatoon.

Nico Saler sent the ball in on a free kick from 15 yards outside of the box that was initially knocked away by Huskie keeper Greg Buckley. The ball was deflected into the air as Saskatchewan attempted to clear when Jankovic got his head on it, sending it past the Huskie keeper.

With the win, Alberta improves to 2-0 on the season. Saskatchewan drops to 1-1.

Alberta jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first half. Mohamed Teliani scored the first goal of the game in the 33rd minute, sliding in near the net to redirect a cross from Shamit Shome. Just two minutes later Tolu Esan found the back of the net after Buckley had come out to challenge.

Saskatchewan avoided going into halftime scoreless with a goal in the 43rd minute. Bryce Marinus made a run down the right side and crossed the ball into the box for Tyler Redl who made no mistake in beating Golden Bear keeper Connor James.

The Huskies would tie the game at two in the 65th minute. James made an initial save on a Saskatchewan corner kick before a clearing attempt was redirected off the top of the cross bar. Matthew Gillot chipped the bouncing ball over to Bobbi Nicholat who deposited it in the back of the Golden Bear net to even the match.

Despite late pressure from Saskatchewan, James and the Golden Bears were able to hold off any comeback attempt.

Buckley made nine saves in the match for the Huskies. Six of those saves, including a penalty kick, came in the opening 45 minutes. James recorded four saves for Alberta for his second win of the season.
