The No. 8 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies used back-to-back second half goals to get past the MacEwan University Griffins 2-1 in their first match of the season Friday afternoon in Saskatoon.

Fifth-year striker Luigi Bekwayo scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute just moments after the Huskies tied the game at one. Bekwayo collected the ball just outside the box and put two quick moves on a MacEwan defender to create space as he moved toward goal. With Griffin keeper Dylon Powley out to challenge, Bekwayo launched a shot that grazed the bottom of the crossbar on its way into the net to put the Huskies ahead.

Tyler Redl scored the first of two Huskie goals in the 54th minute, finishing off a corner kick from Jacob Powell into the top right corner of the net. The second-year midfielder would also add an assist on what would be the game winner.

Youssef Mimouni scored the opening goal of the match for the Griffins in the 52nd minute after collecting a Nick Gomes pass inside the Huskie penalty area. Mimouni sent his attempt past a sprawling Greg Buckley into the back of the Huskie net.

Saskatchewan starts the 2015 season at 1-0, while MacEwan drops to 0-1 after the opening day of Canada West play for both teams.

Both teams had chances in the opening minutes of the match as the game started off with a fast pace. Neither squad could get on the board in the opening 45 minutes as both defensive units squandered any potential scoring chances.

Buckley made four saves in the match for the huskies, while Powley recorded eight saves in the loss.

Next up for Saskatchewan is a visit from the Alberta Golden Bears Sunday at 2:15 p.m. in Saskatoon in a rematch of the 2014 Canada West Final. MacEwan will travel to Lethbridge, Alta. to face the Pronghorns on Sunday.
