SASKATOON - Josh Roach scored at 1:43 of the second overtime to give the University of Saskatchewan Huskies a 4-3 win over the Mount Royal University Cougars Saturday night at Rutherford Rink.

With the plenty of space on the ice as the teams played three-on-three hockey in the second overtime Roach made the most of the extra room. The Huskie forward took the puck along the side boards and skated out into the slot where he would fire a shot blocker side on Wyatt Hoflin.

The weekend sweep in a battle of U Sports Top 10 teams improves the No. 2 ranked Huskies record to 13-3-2. The Cougars, ranked No. 5, drop to 11-6-1 after Saturday's loss.

The Huskies scored twice on their seven power play chances on the night, the first coming from Levi Cable. A nice tic-tac-toe play opened up a shot in the slot for Cable. Hoflin made a nice initial save on the shot, but the puck stayed loose in front of the net and was eventually jammed home by the Huskie forward at 10:31.

Mount Royal answered the Huskie goal with a power play marker of their own before the first period was out. Connor Rankin and Maddison Smiley provided the assists on Cam Maclise's seventh tally of the season at 15:12 to tie the game at one.

The Cougars would take their first lead of the game 6:41 into the second period. Jamie King scored his third goal of the season on an unassisted effort.

Less than two minutes later the Huskies knotted it back up at two with a Logan McVeigh Goal. Josh Roach slipped a quick pass between the Cougar defenceman's legs to a streaking McVeigh who beat Hoflin.

The Huskies struck first in the final period, again making the most of the man advantage. Micahel Sofillas scored his 10th of the season from Roach and Jesse Forsberg to make it 3-2 Huskies 9:05 into the third.

Mount Royal would continue to pressure the Canada West leading Huskies late in the game, looking for the equalizer. At 14:22 while killing off a penalty, Zack Henry came through for the Cougars. The Cougars broke into the Huskies zone 3-on-1 where Henry would finish off David Stephens pass.

Roach's overtime winner was his fifth of the season and gives the Huskies the full four points from the weekend.

Saskatchewan will enjoy another weekend at home against the Calgary Dinos January 13-14. Mount Royal will begin a home-and-home series with the Lehbridge Pronghorns at home next weekend.
