CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos were shutout 5-0 by the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, Friday evening, Nov. 18th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
The Huskies opened the scoring early in the first period off of the stick of Andrew Johnson. Just over four minutes into the game, Jordan Fransoo received the puck on the point, fired a quick snap shot that Johnson tipped past Dinos goaltender Steven Stanford.
After Calgary made a trail to the penalty box, killing off a five-on-three penalties but Saskatchewan continued to find its way past Stanford in the second period. On a quick breakout just past the half-way mark of the period, Michael Sofillas gave a back-hand pass to Logan McVeigh who slid his fourth of the season between Stanford's pads.
Howell noted there were brief moments in the first and second where the team played well, "We had one shift in the first period where we actually pushed a little bit. I thought with the five-on-three kill in the second, we were really good and urgent, smart, determined. We played really well and did a good job and then went to sleep again. In the third, we just watched the game and couldn't keep up."
Just 50 seconds later, off the face-off and some regrouping at centre ice, Connor Cox fired a shot that hit a few bodies in front, producing a rebound right onto the stick of Levi Cable to pull ahead 3-0.
The Huskies showed no signs of slowing down in the final stanza. Kohl Bauml broke into the Dinos zone, passed to Cable on the half wall who saw Johnson sneaking in back-door. Johnson moved to the slot, went backhand and slipped it five-hole and in, for his second of the game.
Saskatchewan added one more to the score sheet on the power play with under a second left in the game.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow evening, Nov. 19th. Puck is set to drop at six o'clock at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
