Huskies and Golden Bears Battle for Conference Title

For the first time since 2011-12, the Canada West Men's Hockey Finals returns to Rutherford Rink.

The third ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies (22-6, 2-0) will play host to their fourth ranked rivals, the University of Alberta Golden Bears (19-7-2, 2-0), in the best-of-three conference championship series beginning on Friday night.

Puck drop for Game 1 is set for 7 p.m. on March 4 with Game 2 scheduled for Saturday, March 5 at 7 p.m. If necessary, a decisive Game 3 will be played Sunday, March 6 at 7 p.m.

The top seeded Huskies advanced to the Finals with a sweep of the Calgary Dinos in a Canada West Semifinal series last weekend. The Huskies needed two overtimes before captain Kendall McFaull gave the green and white a 4-3 victory. In Game 2, Saskatchewan overcame a two-goal deficit en route to a 5-3 win.

The Golden Bears cruised past the Mount Royal Cougars 7-1 in Game 1 last Friday night in Edmonton. In Game 2, Alberta also had to overcome an early disadvantage before taking a 5-3 decision to advance to the Finals.

As the top two finishers in the Canada West, both teams have already qualified for the 2016 University Cup in Halifax, N.S. hosted by the Saint Mary's University Huskies.

The two teams met four times during the 2015-16 regular season. Saskatchewan won the initial meeting 3-2 in Saskatoon on October 30, before losing their first game of the season on Halloween night 4-2. With the top seed in the conference already locked up, the Huskies travelled to Alberta in the second to last weekend of the season. The Golden Bears won both matchups by scores of 3-0 and 5-2.

It is the first post-season meeting for the two schools since the 2014 University Cup Final. Alberta hoisted the trophy in Saskatoon that March with a 3-1 win. The two rivals last met in the Canada West playoffs in 2012-13 when the Golden Bears beat the Huskies in Game 3 of the conference finals.
