STRONG FINISH LEADS HUSKIES TO WIN
SASKATOON – The No. 7 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies didn't lead until there was just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but had the lead when the final horn sounded defeating the University of Manitoba Bisons 77-70 Saturday night at the PAC.
Jauquin Bennet-Boire's jump shot with 2:16 to go gave the Huskies a 71-70 lead, their first of the game, as they finished the night on a 15-0 run. The Huskies trailed 70-62 with 6:01 to go before holding the Bisons scoreless for the final six minutes.
Manitoba opened the game shooting 54% and got out to a 10-point lead at 27-17 after the opening quarter. The Bisons held the halftime lead at 45-37.
Unlike Friday night's second half, defence prevailed in the second half. Saskatchewan cut into the lead, outscoring the Bisons 19-15 in the third quarter to close to within four. Saskatchewan went nine minutes in the third and fourth quarters staying within five points of Manitoba until the Bisons pulled ahead 70-62. From that point on, the Huskies held the visitors scoreless.
Fifth-year guard Evan Ostertag scored a game high 21 points, adding four rebounds in 37 minutes of floor time. Bennett-Boire added 17 points and five assists.
Wyatt Anders notched a double-double 10 points and 15 rebounds in 33 minutes. AJ Basi scored a team-high 20 points and added four rebounds.
The Huskies travel to Victoria next weekend for a rematch of the 2014-15 Canada West Championship. Saskatchewan knocked off Victoria in preseason play in October. Manitoba returns home to host the Calgary Dinos.
