HUSKIES PLAY IN NEW-LOOK CANADA WEST FORMAT2014-06-20

The Canada West basketball schedule features a new divisional format for the 2014-15 season.

Within the new structure, the University of Saskatchewan Huskie basketball squads will play in the Pioneer Division with 11 other schools. The six remaining schools, who joined the Canada West in 2006-07 or later, will play in the Explorer Division. The divisions will not meet until the conference playoffs.

In the new format, 10 teams (seven from the Pioneer Division and three from the Explorer Division) are granted playoff life. In the first round the bottom four teams will compete in a play-in series to compete in a quarter-final the following weekend. The winners of the quarter-final series will compete in the Canada West Final Four hosted by the highest remaining seed.

Both Huskie basketball teams had successful seasons in 2013-14 with the women’s team crowned conference champions for the third time in history and the men winning a bronze medal. Both advanced to the CIS Championship, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

Highlights of the schedule include:

  • The Huskies open the season October 31-November 1 on the road against the Alberta Golden Bears/Pandas.
  • Saskatchewan plays at home for the first time on November 14-15 against the Winnipeg Wesmen. The Huskies will host the annual Cover Your Paws event, as well as raise the women’s basketball Canada West Championship banner.
  • Huskie Athletics will host Fan Appreciation on February 13-14 against the Calgary Dinos.
  • Basketball playoffs begin February 20.
  • Ryerson University Rams will host the CIS Men’s Basketball Final 8 March 13-15, the women’s event will be hosted by the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City on the same weekend. Both championships are apart of CIS Super Championship Weekend.

Start times for Huskie Athletics home games will be at 6:15 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men) at the PAC.
