CIS TOP 10 TUESDAY2014-02-18

OTTAWA (CIS) – One year after they captured the first national title in program history, the University of Montreal Carabins head into the conference playoffs as the team to beat in CIS women’s hockey.

The Carabins (17-3) move up two spots to No. 1 in the final coaches’ poll of the campaign following their second win in as many weeks over McGill (18-2), which had topped the last 12 national rankings since late October.

In other CIS sports, Windsor (women’s basketball), Carleton (men’s basketball), Alberta (men’s hockey), UBC (women’s swimming), Toronto (men’s swimming), Calgary (women’s track & field), York (men’s track & field) and Brock (women’s & men’s wrestling) all hold on to the pole position.

In women’s hockey, the Carabins edged the Martlets 2-1 in Saturday’s regular season finale but still finished two points back of their archrivals in the RSEQ standings. The best-of-three Quebec semifinals will see Montreal face off against Ottawa and McGill battle Concordia, starting on Friday.

The women’s hockey playoffs got under way over the past weekend in the OUA and Canada West with all five Top 10 teams in action making it safely to the second round, including No. 3 Guelph, No. 4 Laurier, No. 6 UBC, No. 7 Toronto and No. 8 Queen’s.

The CIS winter championship season kicks off this week with the top swimmers in the country competing at the University of Toronto from Thursday to Saturday. The defending champion UBC women and Toronto men head into the Speedo championships as the top seeds.
