PENALTY KICK NIPS HUSKIES IN OT2013-11-07
A penalty kick scored in overtime in a CIS Men's Soccer Championship quarter-final match lifted the host UNB Varsity Reds 2-1 over the Saskatchewan Huskies.
Yousuf Mohammad was awarded a penaty kick when he appeared to be tripped up in the box. His shot beat keeper Michal Bandula in the 15th minute of the first overtime.
It looked like an early victory for the Huskies after third-year Saskatoon native Brett Levis shot the ball from the 25-yard line and put it to the top left corner over UNB goalkeeper Aaron McMurray only six minutes in.
“It silenced a very great atmosphere [and] a big crowd,” said Huskies head coach Bryce Chapman.
But it would be the only goal for the Huskies.
Second year UNB striker, Oliver Jones, a native of London, UK, scored in the 28th minute, tying the game for the VReds. Jones pushed the ball up and took a kick from inside the six where he was able to put it in the back of the Huskies’ net.
Saskatchewan will now face the Ryerson Rams in a consolation semifinal Friday at 1:30 p.m. (11:30am Saskatchewan time). The match can be viewed on cis-sic.tv. It is the first appearance at a CIS Championship for University of Saskatchewan men's soccer.
