Holding off a University of Saskatchewan rally, the visiting University of Regina Cougars took a 3-1 (29-27, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19) victory over the Huskies Thursday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
After Regina took a 2-0 lead in the match with 29-27 and 25-23 wins in the first two sets, Saskatchewan found their stride in the third. Tied at 10, the Huskies went ahead after a Regina service error. Big plays by Anne Hanbidge, Kayla Tycholiz and Camen Dubnick pulled Saskatchewan ahead 19-14. The Cougars couldn’t get back in the set, losing 25-20.
In the fourth, the Huskies led until a Shelby Hack attack gave the Cougars a 16-15 lead. Regina kept the lead to the 25-19 win.
With the win Regina improves to 4-15, while the Huskies drop to 3-16.
Tori Glynn led the Cougars to the win with 13 kills. Michelle Sweeting and Desiree Ates each added another nine apiece. Chelsea Ziolkowski recorded 11 digs and Meagan Lane tallied three service aces.
Candace Hueser led the Huskies in the match tallying 13 kills, followed by Hanbidge with 12. Dubnick recorded a match-high 17 digs, while Hanbidge added 13.
The two teams will battle again Saturday at 6 p.m.in Regina in the second match of the home-and-home series. The match can be watched on www.canadawest.tv
