COUGARS DOUBLE-UP HUSKIES2013-01-25

Scoring in each period led the No. 10 ranked University of Regina Cougars to a 4-2 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night in Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink.
 
The Cougars’ tallied at 18:43 in the first, 5:35 in the second and twice in the third. All four Cougars’ goals were unassisted.
 
With the win, Regina moves to 15-7-1 and into a tie for second place in the conference with the Alberta Pandas. Saskatchewan drops to 8-11-4.

Game Stats
 
Saskatchewan’s Amber Broker opened the scoring the game at 14:11 with a quick shot that beat Cougars’ netminder Toni Ross. Paige Wheeler notched the game at 18:43 in the first.
 
Regina’s captain Rianne Wight gave the Cougars the 2-1 lead at 5:35 in the second period and fifth-year Gina Campbell scored at 6:35 in the third. Huskie captain Cara Wooster pulled the Huskies within one after a power play goal at the 13 minute mark of the third but a Regina empty netter by Stephanie Sawchuk sealed the Cougars’ win.
 
Ross made 18 saves in the victory for the Cougars, while rookie Huskies’ goaltender Cassidy Hendricks made 31 saves at the other end of the ice.
 
The two teams will meet again Saturday in Regina for the second game of the home-and-home series. Puck drop is 7 p.m. at the Co-operators Centre.
