HUSKIES EYE PLAYOFFS IN HOME-AND-HOME 2013-01-24

For the second time this season the University of Saskatchewan hockey teams and provincial rival the University of Regina Cougars will meet in a home-and-home weekend affair.

The Huskies and Cougars play at Rutherford Rink Friday and travel to Regina Saturday.

With an eye toward securing a playoff spot, the Huskies will look for success against the Cougars.

Splitting their first home-and-home series in November, the Huskies are much improved posting a 7-4-2 record since the meetings. Saskatchewan (8-10-4) will look to lock down one of three playoff spots remaining in the conference. The Cougars (14-7-1) have secured a postseason date and sit just two points behind the Alberta Pandas for second seed.

Since 2004-05, the Huskies are 23-14-3 against the Cougars.

Rianne Wight has led the Cougars on offence scoring 10 goals and 13 assists in 22 games. Paige Wheeler and Stephanie Sawchuk have also made strides for Regina with a combined 15 goals and 19 helpers.

Fifth-year veterans Cara Wooster and Danny Stone have been the offensive sparks for the Huskies, sitting third and fifth in scoring in the Canada West. Captain Wooster has tallied 11 goals and 13 assists, while Stone has 10 goals and 11 assists.  Cami Wooster has also helped with the Huskies’ offence with five goals and 14 assists.

Rookie goalie Cassidy Hendricks has played in 19 games for the Huskies posting a .918 save percentage and a 2.33 goals against average. Toni Ross and Jennifer Schmidt have split time in net for the Cougars. Schmidt enters with an 8-5 record, while Ross sits at 6-3.
